Transferring Office 2010 Home and Student to a new computer

Two XP computers in our household are currently running Office 2003 Student and Teacher. I am considering purchasing Office Home & Student 2010 Family Pack, 3PC (Disc Version**) ASIN:** B00337D8U6. My plan would be to install it now on these two computers, but then, within a few months, buy two replacement computers (either Windows 7 or 8) and transfer the two Office licenses to the new computers. Can I do that with this particular version of Office 2010? How would I go about doing the transfer?

I think this reply is high-handed and useless. The fact is: it is perfectly legitimate to purchase and install Office 2010 right now, and it is a perfectly sensible question whether the three licenses of a Student and Home version would be able to be re-used within a few months on a new Windows 7 or 8 machine. To say in effect, "We don't sell 2010 anymore; you should buy 2013." is not an answer but an insult. Please answer the question.

I have ordered a new computer with Windows 7 Pro. Since my understanding is that Office 2010 works best with Windows 7, while Office 2013 works best with Windows 8, I ordered Office 2010 Home and Student, on disc, with license for 3 computers.

I understand that if we ever need to remove one of the three Office 2010 installations, we can in effect re-use that license on another computer. I hope this is true in case it turns out that the new computer has a defect and needs to be returned.

Thanks very much for replying to my inquiry.

Office 2010 works just fine on Win 7 AND Win 8.

Office 2013 works just fine on Win 7 as well as Win 8.

NOTE: the only "Office 2010" bundle that allows install on 3 computers at the same time is Office 2010 Home and Student.  If you have been sold one of the other bundles, probably Office 2010 Professional with the understanding that you can do 3 concurrent installs you either have a "bootleg" copy or you have misunderstood the license terms for that bundle. "Retail" licenses of Office 2010 Pro and "Home and Business" only allow install on up to 2 computers at the same time.

Yes, if you have the "3-computer" Office 2010 Home and Student license then you can "transfer" any of those 3 installations to new computers as required.  You simply uninstall from the current computer and install on the new one.  You may have to use "phone activation" if you get a "too many installs" type error message.

FYI: when you do decide to buy Office 2013 you have to be careful what you buy.

"Office 2013 Home and Student" is now only licensed for 1 computer at a time, no longer 3!

If you see "Office 365" "on sale" for US$69 (or less) (NOTE: that is PER YEAR repeating payments!) instead of US$99, take a close look. It is probably for "Office 365 Personal" which is a new bundle that is good for install on only one computer at a time!

It was probably a polite way of saying MS no longer sells Office 2010 versions, and as such caution should be used if purchasing from other sources.

If you have a full retail version of any MS Office product it can be uninstalled from one PC and installed on a replacement.

All Home & Student versions up to Office 2010 are licensed for 3 devices in use by the family, excepting any KeyCard version which is licensed only for the first PC its installed on - even if that PC dies in the same week.

Office 2010 is fully compatible with win8
