Significant performance issues with Remote Desktop

I use RDP to access a (very) remote PC regularly. It is very remote, has a satellite connection, but generally is 60ms latency and multi MBit bandwidth. 90% of the time its practically as good as sitting at a local machine.

I use Microsoft Remote Desktop for Mac, and for iOS.

Recently I installed updates on the Windows 10 machine (remote machine).

Since then, RDP has been slow and laggy, basically almost unusable.

I've tried adjusting settings for connection and performance to no effect. There seems to be long (30s...) and repeated periods where my inputs are ignored and I get no feedback for that period, then a short period of update then nothing again. This occurs no matter the client (MacOS or iOS). I'm fairly certain that this point it is the server side that has cause this step change in performance.

I'm going to search the update logs for the Windows 10 machine to find out what version and what was updated, but I'm putting this out there incase others are seeing this.

Incidentally, I tried using the latest RDP Beta (10.9.7) but this hasn't help ( I didn't expect it to really).

    Hello,

I understand you're encountering significant performance issues with Remote Desktop since updating the Windows 10 machine.

Here are some troubleshooting steps you can consider:

    1. Inspect the update history on the Windows 10 machine to pinpoint which version or specific update might have triggered this change. Consider rolling back the update temporarily to see if it resolves the problem.
    2. Disable any unnecessary services or applications running on the remote PC as they could be consuming resources. Additionally, try disabling antivirus or firewall software momentarily to verify if they are interfering with RDP performance.
    3. Event Logs Analysis: Check the event logs on the remote Windows 10 machine for errors or warnings related to Remote Desktop Services. This may provide insights into what is causing the lag. Enable “Show Analytic and Debug Logs” first.

    1. Ensure that network conditions haven't changed significantly, despite having a stable latency of around 60ms and high bandwidth. Monitor network traffic during an RDP session to check for congestion or other anomalies.

I hope the information above is helpful. If you have any question or concern, please feel free to let us know.

    Regards,

    Jacen Wang
