I've seen 3 different naming conventions for shared printers so far:
- Naming the shared printer like
Pinter01
,Pinter02
,Pinter03
, ... - Naming based on department like
FinancePrt01
,HrPrt01
, ... - Naming based on location like
B01F01R12
,B01F01R10
,B02F02R09
, ... (B = Building, F = Floor, R = Room)
Naming by location makes it easy to find the printer and the printed documents. For instances if departments are spread over different locations. You have to maintain the name of the printer if moved to a different location.
Naming by department makes it easy to find the printer and the printed documents if the department is centralized at the same and known location. You have to maintain the name of the printer if moved to a different department.
