Hello... I have a lot of doubts about the licenses/cals I would like to help!

  • I'm with a company that uses an accounting program (I still don't have information on how this system is used on the server) but I already want to be one step ahead.
  • Doubt 1: if this program needs remote access to use this program, I would have to buy the device cals right?
  • Doubt 2: if this program is only a database on the server that communicates via the network with the server, would I have to buy some lime?

Doubt 3: This windows server 2019 Essentials Small Business with up to 25 users and 50 devices
Specialized servers
No CAL is needed
could be used by me in case the program uses both remote access and only communication with the network

Installing the RDS role on essentials is not supported so you'll need to stand up another member server, add the RDS role and RDS Cals for the users.

1- To access the server with more than two users, yes, you need to purchase RDS calls. RDS we have both device and user calls. ex -if you have 20 devices and users are working as a shift basis, itsb better to purchase device calls. otherwise, you can go with user cals.
2- To access a server via network , yes we need CAL license( in your case, you need both RDS calls and Windows calls
3-You cant use essential server for this requirment

Sorry, for bumping up old thread, but I have a similar question:

My installation can be squeezed below 25/50 users/devices CAL for a Windows Server 2019 Essentials.
I assume that would allow me to run AD and FS for my home.

However I consider having a Datacenter server as well to allow me to host the above essentials and some Win10 and Linux/FreeBSD VM's. Question is, do I need additional CALs for the last server or will the User CAL's from the Essentials Server count the Host as just one device ?

If not, can I just run the Hyper-V host standalone and use the builtin 1 CAL for Administration ?
