IPAM redundancy deployment

Question

I am looking to migrate from Blue Cat DDI to Windows Server IPAM. I am having a hard time finding any documentation on deploying IPAM with redundancy and also how to possibly import data from 3rd party DDI solutions. Any suggestions on how I may find any such documentation?

Hi ,

Please understand, we are not familiar with 3rd party DDI solutions and I did not find any related documents talking about migration from Blue Cat DDI to Windows Server IPAM.

In addition, as far as I know, IPAM is used for planning, deploying, managing and monitoring of IP address infrastructure. There is no official document talking about deploying IPAM with redundancy.

Thank you for your reply. Apparently there are three options when deploying IPAM

Distributed - Centralized - One IPAM server in the enterprise

Of the three, two seem to have some form of redundancy. I found another article describing a Hybrid deployment as - you have a local as well as a central both managing each service.

With that being said, does Microsoft supply any documentation on the steps required to deploy IPAM in a distributed or hybrid scenario?

Hi ,

Distributed means you install one IPAM on each site, do discovery, then use each one to only manage the services at that site.

Note: If you choose a distributed topology you should note that the IPAM servers do not communicate with each other or update each other’s databases. Instead you would have to customize the discovery scope of each IPAM server to ensure the whole domain space was covered.

Hybrid means the same as Distributed, PLUS, you install a central IPAM, do discovery and use it to manage all discovered services.

With Hybrid, you have a local as well as a central both managing each service. The local IPAMs do not share management of services with each other, but they all share management of their services with the Central IPAM.

Based on my research, it seems there is no Microsoft official document talking about deploying IPAM in a distributed or hybrid scenario step by steps. Only illustrate the example of the hybrid deployment model and distributed IPAM deployment model:
