Windows RAID mirror with different SSDs?

We got a new workstation shipped with a pair of 960Gb industrial calss SSDs for the Windows Pro partition.

However, because of immediate shipment requirement, the supplier installed SSDs of different brands:

Samsung PM883

Micron 5300

Different controllers, different NAND-memory, different generations of ATA command set. Geterally SATA compatible and almost of the same size.

The supplier has preconfigured the system in AHCI mode, not intel RAID.

We have no time for fighting with the supplier, or reinstalling everything. I think about using Windows software RAID.

So the question, is it safe enough for SSDs of different brands being combined into Windows Soft-RAID/Mirror? Does anyone have such experience? Are there any implications of doing that?

    Hi AndyJP-9397,

    In my experience this is not a problem. Any speed and performance will default to the lower of the two drives. Apart from that, there is no reason why it cannot work for you.

    I was afraid that the drive negotiates the transfer window with the controller most suitable to its internal write size. In case of raid the controller will decide such parameters and one of the drives may work in non-optimal mode reducing its life by unalligned erase/writes.
    Is it possible? Didd you run a write-to-kill test, or at least loaded it with heavy tasks?
    We intend using it with physical simulations where really a lot of writes will happen, particularly to swap area.

    In addidion, Samsung drive has ACS4 Rev5 command set, Micron is something old, ACS2 if I am not mistaken. Who knows how it may influence the joint SSDs operation besides the simple difference in speeds. Speeds are the least of my worries(while the access time does not degrade to HDD level).
