Monitor pgbouncer on Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server

I'd like to create an Azure alert to monitor the pgBouncer process on PostgreSQL flexible servers and alert if the process is down.

I believe port 6432 is used by pgBouncer, so monitoring if that port is up or not might be one way to do it. Unfortunately, I haven't figured out how that could be done either.

I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions.

If my understanding is correct you want to connect to pgbouncer as the user to extract stats? and you want to know the steps to do that.

No, not exactly.

I'm new to Azure monitoring and I've been asked to create alerts for the database team. They use PostgreSQL Flexible servers and they want to be alerted if pgbouncer is unavailable.

I've been trying to figure out if this type of alert could be built using log analytics (if something related to pgbouncer going down appears in logs). Another thought was that maybe we could monitor port 6432, the idea being if port 6432 was not up we could assume pgbouncer was down.

But either way, I haven't made much progress on this yet.

My hope is that maybe someone else has already done this and might have a suggestion.

Hi @psvo There is no direct metric that can help us to create an alert for PgBouncer.
There are 2 things that can be tried

Azure Network Watcher connection monitor. as mentioned by @Maxim Sergeev This can be used to monitor the port 6432

We can try creating the query and that can run in Azure diagnostics. The query can run on a regular basis and will generate an alert when the connection to PgBouncer is failing.

Yes -network connection watcher is something that would work for me.

I was also thinking that maybe a resource health monitor would raise a 'degraded' service alert if a requested service (ie: pgbouncer) is not actually running. That's another option that I plan on trying. I'll update the thread when I've had a chance to confirm.

This is an example how the Connection Monitor does the monitoring, including a latency and a test measurement

We recently release PgBouncer monitoring metrics for Azure PostgreSQL Flexible Server.
