Question about DNS dynamic update

Currently the zone on DNS servers of one of our domains is set to Non Secure and Secure Updates. Now we want to change it to accept only “Secure Updates”.

We understand that there should be no impact to the existing records. However we would like to confirm if there will be any impact on our existing records in the zone by doing so? The zone may have previously got updated from appliances that are not working part of domain- and we do not want to get them deleted now.

Also the zone contains records that were manually created by the administrator. We do not want any of the existing records to be deleted.

Any reply will be appreciated!

    Hi,

    Thanks for your reply.

Firstly, the previous existing records will not be deleted since the aging and scavenging is not enabled. Even though we enable this feature in the future, the static records we manually created also will not be deleted. Aging and scavenging only delete dynamic aged records beyond No-refresh interval + Refresh interval.

    >>The zone may have previously got updated from appliances that are not working part of domain- and we do not want to get them deleted now.

May I know how did above appliances records updated? Were they static records or dynamic records? If they were not part of domain and dynamic records, they cannot update after you change the setting to only secure update. However, if you don’t enable aging and scavenging for this zone, these existing records will not be deleted.

    Best Regards,
    Sunny

    Hi,

Thanks for posting in Q&A platform.

Before we go further, may I know if the Aging and Scavenging was enabled on this DNS server?

    Best Regards,
    Sunny
