Hi,

Everything is in the title. Let's say you have a SCOM 2016 infrastructure installed on Windows Server 2016 and SQL Server 2016. This environnent still supports agents on Windows Server 2008 R2. What happens if you do an in-place upgrade of this infrastructure to SCOM 2019. Will it be blocked somewhere in the process or will it just not show the agents on WS2008R2 in the pending actions for agent upgrade and they will keep functionning as SCOM 2016 agents reporting to a SCOM 2019 server ? I didn't find information about this so some help would be nice.

Regards,

François

    Hi anonymous user

you can still monitor those although they are not officially supported.
You can check this thread, where Neha Garg, who is from Microsoft also confirms this.

System Center 2019 - Microsoft Monitoring Agent

Not supported means that they have not (and the will probably will not) tested it, but there aren't any explicit blocks to monitor Windows Server 2008 and R2.

This means - you should be able to still monitor those, but if there are issues with those particular agents, Microsoft will not support you until you upgrade them to a supported OS.
I hope I could clarify this for you!

    Hi anonymous user,

It’s fully possible to monitor Windows Server 2008 & Windows Server 2008 R2 with SCOM 2019, although it’s not supported.

Remember that not supported does not mean that it won’t work, what the term ”not supported” usually means is that Microsoft has not tested it.

Also if you have any 32-Bit Windows Server computer, you can use an older SCOM agent to monitor the computer, as SCOM 2019 only offers 64-bit agents.

Thank you for your answers !

Another question comes to my mind. I read from your links that is should work even if not supported. Fine with me.

But do you know if it's still possible to push an SCOM 2019 agent from the console on a windows server 2008 R2 or is there some prerequisites check that will block the installation ?

    Regards,

    François
