Can not create a unique data factory name? - I have tried tens of options including one with my phone#, house#, and kids names. and one with 50 random letters. There is no way these are already taken.
It just keeps saying "The Data Factory name is already taken. Choose a different name"
What is happening?

Many of them are facing the same issue. Try creating them via PowerShell as a workaround as it seems some issue at UI end

This problem has been fully resolved.
We are aware of this issue, and mitigation is underway.

I see this issue is still there today.
Your scenario is you have picked up a name which is already being used by someone else unlike the other cases here in this thread which was a global UI issue
There is no Datafactory with that name globally. It is giving me the UI error for anything I enter in the NAme field.
If I remove data and tab out it still shows me error.
Being globally unique means that the name is not taken in the entire Azure Data Factory service. This is similar to the case when you create a user name for a new email account for example. I can confirm that factory name 12312 is already taken therefore it is expected to see the error. Try to pick a name that is truly unique globally.
Thanks for the clarity. I thought it was limited to our management group / Subscription level.
