Using a metric zero (0) on the network card interface

Hello,

I'm looking for any official documentation which states why metric 0 cannot be used on the network card under "Advanced TCP/IP Settings". When trying to do so, message pops up saying "Please enter a metric between 1 and 9999".

Meanwhile, when it is possible to set metric to zero (0) using powershell command: set-netipinterface -interface 10 -interfacemetric 0
After setting it to zero using PowerShell, it seems working fine. Also, when using command get-netipinterface it shows blank at the column InterfaceMetric.

thanks in advance

    Hello there,

Maybe setting it to zero might not be logically correct. The purpose of the automatic metric feature is to determine the speed of the interface for each default gateway and to assign the metric, which is the cost of using a particular route.

The metric is weighted by the number of hops to the destination. The number of hops to any host on the local subnet is one. Every router that must be used to reach the destination is another hop. When it is determined that there are multiple routes to the same destination, the metric is evaluated to determine which is the lowest metric and this the fastest route to the destination.

1 to 9999 are valid values.
