My windows Server running version 2016 has suddenly started to produce an error when installing updates or trying to add new roles or features.

for exmaple i see this in teh seup event log

Package KB??????? failed to be changed to the installed state. Status 0X80070490

This happens to any update that i try to install.

it also stops new roles or featuers being installed.

i have tried loads of things including

resetting windows update.

deleting c:\windows\softwaredistribution

deleting c:\windows\ system32\cartroot2

running sfc /scannow

running DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth

running DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

varuous other things.

run windows update

the updates are listed

select install

they fail with the error

Any help / suggestions would be much appreciated.

You can also try a repair install by running setup.exe from the root of install media but I wouldn't hold much hope, time may be better spent standing up a new one for replacement, patch fully, migrate roles over and move on.

    Please try below methods:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/13oqere/0x80070490_element_not_found/

Take ownership of the following registry key then delete it:

    1.Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\DriverOperations\0

    1. Reboot the server - Sometimes the server will go through in percentages so let it be till it's completed, it can take 5 or 10 minutes
    2. Try installing .Net Framework update- Upon a reboot, Windows will indicate with a "We couldn't complete the updates" message that it couldn't install the update but it will continue installing it anyway
    3. Install the latest CU - After a reboot it will be stuck on "Working on updates: 100% Complete" for 7- hours so leave the server to finish updating overnight
