Split screen view will not allow selection of a single cell for a formula

Hello -

I am having an issue with the Excel split-screen view. When I try to enter a formula, I cannot select a single cell. Excel automatically extends the range and selects (what seems to me) a random number of cells, sometimes a column of cells, sometimes a quad of cells, etc.

I have tried to look up a solution but I haven't found anything similar to my issue. I do not have extended selection turned on. I do not have named cells or ranges.

Thoughts?

I am using Microsoft Office LTSC 64-bit Professional Plus 2021, Excel version 2108 (Build 14332.240400).

I don't know if this is allowed but I recorded a video in Loom to show what is happening. It is short (2 minutes). I have tried this on at least 10 different spreadsheets and I have the same issue. I have used the split screen successfully for years so I don't know what I might have done differently to have this issue to occur.
