Hi!

We have created a new XenApp server based on Windows Server 2019.
We encounter random issues with this image, and we are not able to find the root cause.
The issue's we encounter looks related to Remote Desktop Services, but we are unsure.

We random see:

  • Users see "LOCKING" in their session after they want to reconnect to the old session. New users cannot log in to server. Current users are stuck. Through console/RDP as administrator is also not possible.
  • Users see "Remote Desktop Service is currently busy". New users cannot log in to server. Current users are stuck. Through console/RDP as administrator is also not possible.
  • Users see "Please wait for the remote desktop configuration". New users cannot log in to server. Current users are stuck. Through console/RDP as administrator is also not possible.
  • The XenApp server just randomly shutdown due to an error. Server must be started again. We see a weird grey screen.

The cluster is running on:

  • Version 8.2 CU1
  • NVIDIA vGPU 450.55

The image is running with:

  • Windows Server 2019 version 1809 build 17763.3534
  • Citrix HDX Realtime Connector 2.9
  • Citrix CVAD 2203 LTSR CU1 - Session Recorder Agent
  • Citrix CVAD 2203 LTSR CU1 - Virtual Delivery Agent
  • Citrix VM Tools 9.3.0
  • NVIDIA Graphics Driver 451.48

We tried solving the issue:

  • Latest Windows updates
  • Citrix Forum CTX459728 > after applying it seems that the issue got worse. We reverted
  • We checked Citrix Forum CTX236270 > but its not applicable.
  • Disable Graphic Status Indicator

I am also in contact with two different company's, and they also have the same issue but without the use of Citrix.
Those are RDS farms. It seems to be a microsoft issue.

Does anyone have an idea?

Kind regards,
Mark

    Hi Mark,

I have to echo what you said. This explains the exact issue we are facing. Also running vGPU, but on version 513.46. Everything else is pretty much the same. We are running the environment on Hyper-V, but also using Citrix VDA 2203 CU1. I was going to try upgrading the VDA to 2209 CR, but I always seem to run into issues with the current releases of Citrix. Something I am working on now, is removing the RDS role entirely and re-adding along with reinstalling the Citrix VDA. I will let you know if that helps.

Side note, could you share your Citrix Graphics policy settings? ie: visual quality, FPS, compression, etc?

    Thanks!

    Josh

Interesting. We're also running 2203 CU1 on our VDAs and in the past few weeks some of our servers have gotten stuck exactly like this. They're running in VMWare, not Hyper-V though. Same deal - connecting directly to the console via vcenter is fine, but as soon as I try to log in: "Please wait for the Remote Desktop Configuration"

I can get access to the system's remote Computer Management. Two services seem to be stuck between states - appxsvc is stuck "Starting" and wlidsvc is stuck "stopping"

Enter-PSSession works on the host, but 'shutdown /s' merely hangs then eventually times out with remote pipeline broken.

AV-wise we're just running standard Windows Defender. Endpoint Management is just MECM/SCCM.

    No vGPU.
