Make the change to the on-prem object. Looks like you are syncing from on-prem.

Attempted to add new smtp and will set to as reply address via office365 SSL for email user but getting an error.

You need to modify the "proxyAddresses" from local AD. If there exist Exchange on-premises server, it is suggested to change from the Exchange on-premises admin center.
