Hi we are facing an issue with multiple servers within our environment where when you open up disk management you get the message

'Unable to connect to Virtual Disk service'

If you start the virtual disk service it turns itself off instantly with the same timestamp in Event viewer as when the disk service has been started. Details of event viewer when the service stops:

  • System
    • Provider
    [ Name] Virtual Disk Service
    • EventID 4
    [ Qualifiers] 16896 Level 4 Task 0 Keywords 0x80000000000000
    • TimeCreated
[ SystemTime] 2022-12-01T16:12:13.669242900Z EventRecordID 237269 Channel System Computer 'server name' Security
  • EventData @2010001

The firewall is turned off on the server, remote service management, remote volume management is an allowed app through windows defender firewall. The AV on the server is not interfering. I have ran an SFC scan no errors are found. I have tried switching the service to automatic start up type nothing seems to resolve the issue.

If you restart the server the service will work for a few days and then start displaying the same symptoms again.

We use Nimble storage I have checked the LUNs on the storage and these servers all sit on different LUNs. Other servers that do not have this issue also sit on the same LUNs as these servers, so external storage can be ruled out as the issue here.

The issue is occurring on all different versions of windows server 2012, 2016, 2019. I understand the commonality here between them all being the external storage but it doesn't look like its the issue.

These servers are hosted in a VMware environment.

Has anyone had this issue before if so please could you help resolve?

Thank you
