Microsoft SQL Data Sync Agent :: Failed to grant 'logon as a service' rights to user

Question

I'm trying to install Microsoft SQL Data Sync Agent.

I tried to use the users:

• AzureAD\NameSurname
• name.surname@Company portal .com

But I receive the error:

I followed this guide but nothing works.

"Logon as a service" permissions are Windows permission and not SQL permission, so to grant this, your user account must have the right to grant this permission at an OS level.

If this workstation is your machine... then you are responsible for those permissions on your own, BUT if this machine is your work environment, your employers IT department is responsible for granting those permissions to your user... maybe they won't allow every user in their domain to grant that permission...

So I would suggest - if it is your work env. - ask your admin team to assist you with this... maybe it is an easy thing like "run as administrator," or they have to grant you additional permission to run/install that application.

I tried with my home computer and the error is this:

I have added the user to the Local Security Policy. This is the user and it's the same I use on SSMS:

is PCname\Username like stated in many blogs online.
As far as I can see this product never received much love from Microsoft.

• There is no user/password check and you can keep going in the installation. Only later you are prompted that the user cannot go on
• Since Windows 95 we are use to install .exe without choosing a user. Why do we have to do it now?
• The program should propose Windows Authentication and SQL Server authentication. Instead it asks to drop a name without telling what user you are supposed to enter. Then few steps later you are prompted that there is something wrong with your user but you don't know where.

Overall the user experience is not good.
I get it, I'm not installing Minecraft, but I'm use to have this problem while installing Oracle/DB2 stuff and it's a pity that I'm experiencing this with Microsoft.

Take for example the Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) Toolkit.

This tool came out around 2012 and you can choose what login to use.

That's why I mean that this Microsoft SQL Data Sync Agent in comparison it looks half baked.

When I say that Microsoft SQL Data Sync Agent is an unused tool, I really mean it. Even Brent Ozar never used it .
