Hi,

i need help with high bandwith consumption, im seeing a lot of clients have daily 1GB-8GB downloaded from sites:
b.c2r.ts.cdn.office.net
f.c2r.ts.cdn.office.net

Our clients are getting windows upadte from wsus and we have click-to-run offices from 2013 to 2019 versions

I guess this links are for click-to-run office update

1 of our client have downloaded in last 5 days:

  • b.c2r.ts.cdn.office.net 46.2 GB
  • f.c2r.ts.cdn.office.net 7.42 GB

Because click-to-run doesn't go over windows update, i can't see in history nothing has updated in past 30 days either office or windows

How can i troubleshoot click-to-run office? Does this client have some problems and keep downloading same update that doesn't install?

Ok i can see the version on this client pc is (Build 15601.20148) so i must assume that is downloading new version?

Thanks in advance

edit:

Solution

The problem was in our proxy server for some older c2r versions of office

After global whitelisting these 2 links, everything is fine, maybe anti-malware engine was blocking something

    Hi @Ivan Bajo

    > I guess this links are for click-to-run office update

I agree with you, in my opinion, these are for Office updates.

    > 1 of our client have downloaded in last 5 days; Ok i can see the version on this client pc is (Build 15601.20148)

Have you enabled Microsoft Endpoint Manager to manage Office updates?
Or how do you manage Office updates?

Does this client have Micosoft 365 Apps with Version 2208 (Build 15601.20148)?
I suggest you update to the latest version manually to have check.

    • For 64-bit, Current Channel, you can update to Version 2211 (Build 15831.20208). Run "C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ClickToRun\officec2rclient.exe" /update user updatetoversion=16.0.15831.20208 in Run dialog.
    • For 64-bit Semi-Anuual Enterprise Channel (Preview) Channel, you can update to Version 2208 (Build 15601.20378). Run Run "C:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ClickToRun\officec2rclient.exe" /update user updatetoversion=16.0.15601.20378.

Then if the update fails, check for any error messages.
Besides, please disable Office updates temporarily to check this issue.

If the update is successful, I suggest you check whether machine download files from these links.

    Thanks Emily,

We have exchange and AD on premise so we would have to buy MCM or do a lot of administration with folder share

Don't wan't any of it, so i guess we will block this two links on our proxy

Other solution is to pay more bandwith so i don't care that much about the bandwith

Sad thing is that i can't troubleshoot this easily, and update logs aren't helpfull to me that much

If those links are left blocked, what can happen?
