mapped drive error -network path was not found-DNS Client service was disabled,stopped-remote access connection manager service failed

Hi experts,

May I asked for help for the mapped drive error - happened on only one of Windows 10 in remote branch office connecting via successful VPN connection

mapped drive error -network path was not found, happened on 1 computer but other computer has not problem
and noticed Windows event log reported - DNS Client service was disabled/stopped
and -remote access connection manager service failed because of DNS Client service stopped
latest Windows update installed on 29-Sep-2020, removed it but no difference
run net view can't see other computers but itself
can ping the IP address and file-server-name
tried turn off Windows firewall but no difference

wondering what else I can try.

What's the OS version of your file server?
=Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard, Version 6.3.9600 Build 9600

2.Can you access the share with IP address or hostname/FQDN directly?
= No, can’t access With IP or with FQDN, But can nslookup hostname to get the fileserver IP.

I found this solution works for me - following the post at, https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/grayed-out-services-in-windows-10/346bd141-13e2-42de-b93a-c4481b23ec43?page=4

after use Regedit to change the Dnscache's start type to auto=2,

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Dnscache, and locate Start registry key
Change Startup type : =2

and restart the pc, the DNS CLIENT SERVICE status turns into STARTED, and the mapped drive works now.

Did you try to disable the AntiVirus for testing?
Are you able to solve successfully server IP to name, and name to IP?
What is the event ID and the error number?
Can you map the network drive using the file server IP address?

i did not disable antivirus, i will try that by tomorrow and get back.
• can ping the file-server-name, name resolved successfully.
Windows 10 Event ID 7001.
ERROR : The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.
can not map the drive using IP address of fileserver

Greetings!
this laptop doesn't have any antivirus program installed.

but I noticed that other working computer does not have the following:

Error EVENT log for SOURCE: Service Control Manager, with EVENT ID 7001, with DNS Client service was disabled and stopped-remote access connection manager service failed.
Thus, i wondering how to - enable DNS Client Service. currently i is running under the account "Network Service", local builtin administrator account can't make change to this.

Hi GeorgeAziz,

Using REGEDIT i changed DNS CLIENT SERVICE 's startup Type to "automatic", and the button "start" is available , but when hit this button the error "ERROR 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. "

Hi ,

Thanks for your clarify. Please go to your windows 10 computer and then refer to the following steps:

1.Enable the SMB 1.0 support by enabling the following Windows features from the Control Panel, then see if you could access the share:

2.Change the following services startup type from Manual to Automatic:

Function Discovery Provider Host
Function Discovery Resource Publication
SSDP Discovery
UPnP Device Host

3.If the above steps still didn't work, please check SMBclient log on windows 10 to see if there are something related for us to troubleshooting.

Yes, agree that the SMB 1.0 support is the next step we can verify.
and thanks for the screenshots - they are lovely to refer to as the visual and picture is always better for understanding.
As I posted earlier my finding of enable and start the DNS client service, that fixed the mapped drive issue.
