I've been studying "authorize-with-shared-key" because I would like to make some REST calls to the storage REST API. Unfortunately, this page is not complete because they don't explain

how to use CURL to make the call
how to create the HMAC signature

Please point to a complete Microsoft example/tutorial of using the command line tools (bash & powershell) to manipulate resources (like service bus queues, blobs, storage queues and storage containers) by authorizing with a shared key that I can follow along with.

May I know what exactly are you trying to accomplish? Can you elaborate bit more on your query for better understanding the issue.

Yes .. I understand SAS tokens.. I don't need help with SAS.

I see a lot of examples in the Microsoft documentation that used the shared key approach. Please see this shared key example:

set-container-metadata

Please help me understand how to compute that shared key and execute that PUT command with CURL.

Signature is a Hash-based Message Authentication Code (HMAC) constructed from the request and computed by using the SHA256 algorithm, and then encoded by using Base64 encoding.

How do I do this?

@Siegfried Heintze Here are the steps of how you can generate the sharedkey through the PostMan tool: I am checking on how execute that PUT command with CURL.

Pre-requistes:

Install Postman tool

Create a Storage account and a container with Private access level.

Step 1:
Set the required Headers for your request and create the placeholder for the date and auth headers as shown below:

Step 2:
Configure the pre-request script (see my attachment) in the postman. Simply paste the contents of this script file in the Postman as shown below.
This step uses storage access key to sign the header and the signature will be assigned to {{header_authorization}}.

Step 3:
Add the Variables to the Storage Account which will be used by the above script. You can add the Variables by clicking on the Eye Symbol (Environment Quick Look) on top right:

PS: You need to set the request body and relevant headers and paste your contents (if it’s a PUT request).

Step 4:
Then click on the send to execute the request.

You have now successfully sent the request over sharedkey authorization.

I'm trying to follow along with postman. I have it installed and I need to paste in your script that is in the attachment. I cannot find any attachments with a script! Did you forget to attach it? Can you attach it and redundantly paste it as text in the body of our discussion? Did you get this script from somewhere on the internet?

Hmmm... I think this postman is a good teaching tool and I want to see an example work in postman...

However: I did request to learn how to do it with CURL for a reason. I want to be able to put it in a bash or powershell script so I can automate it.

Can you help me find some command line utilities to generate the HMAC signature?
