Error opening sharepoint files when Edge is default browser

A few users are experiencing a problem opening any sharepoint files - this suddenly started happening a couple of days ago with no changes made to the sharepoint admin settings. When opening any document in the browser, or in the app, a dialog box appears asking 'do you want to open filename.filetype from sharepoint.com' giving the options to 'report as unsafe', OK, and cancel. Clicking OK just means the same dialog box repeatedly re-appears until eventually you are given a blank tab in Edge with nothing else happening. This is only affecting a few of our staff.

Changing the default browser to Chrome resolves this and files open normally. We have had Edge as the default browser for several months now with no issue, it's the latest version and deleting history has no effect.

    Hi @Mike ,
Since we can't reproduce your situation, we need to narrow down the problem and try some things.

    1. Try to use your browser's InPrivate mode to see if the same error occurs.
    2. You could create a new SharePoint file to check.
    3. Check if the same issue occurs with other SharePoint site collections.
    4. Can you let the user in question try to log in from another device and let me know the result?
