screen was black and unresponsive when I tried to use it in the morning, tried using mouse and several keys to no avail. I shut down the computer by holding the power button and when I restarted it ran a "fixing (C) stage 1 and 2" process. what does this mean and why would it happen out of the blue - I haven't been having any issues

    Seems it performed Chkdsk.
After the scanning did it fix the issue?

If you are able to log into Safe mode, then update graphic card driver.
