I try

Use DISM to repair Windows Update issues

    On the affected computer, open an administrative Command Prompt window.

    dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

    After these commands have finished, restart the computer.
    
After the computer restarts, try to update it again.

Manually reset the Windows Update or installation components

    Open an administrative Command Prompt window.
    Stop the BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer, and Windows Update services. To do this, enter the following commands:
    net stop wuauserv
    net stop cryptsvc
    net stop bits
    net stop msiserver
    Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder and the Catroot2 folder. To do this, enter the following commands:
    ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
      ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
    Restart the BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer, and Windows Update services. To do this, enter the following commands:
       net start wuauserv
       net start cryptsvc
       net start bits
       net start msiserver
    Close the Command Prompt window and restart the computer.

After the computer restarts, try to update it again.

Hi,

Did you try running the Windows Update Troubleshooter ?

Did you try to install the update manually ?

you can try one of the suggestions provided by this link :

Windows Failed to Install the following Update with Error 0x800F0986.

Another link suggests to install the update manually in case of same issue: Fix Windows Update errors by using the DISM or System Update Readiness tooll

Hi,

First of all, thanks for your answer. Second of all, I at least tried all things suggested, except "Perform an in-place Upgrade" as I am using Windows Server 2022. Whatever I try, it just does not seem to work for me.

i try to repair and i ran

repaired

100 % success but afer that i strarted CU (KB5022286) - i got Error 0x800f0985

So what can i do more ??

I got the sam issue but when trying to reinstall it manually msu say -" could not determine update history on computer"
I cleaned up update history with what the solution say.
So I dont now if that causes this error.

I had a similar problem with other files.

The solution was to move these files from a neighboring server in a cluster with the same OS version. The files were in the WinSxS directory and varied in size and hashes.

I started the process of searching for and installing updates.

After the update ended with error 0x800f0985, I found error messages in the log file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. In my case, they pointed to wvrsvc.exe and wvrf.sys files. An example of such messages:

I looked for these files in the directory C:\Windows\WinSxS\ on the problem server and the server without problems and found differences in the sizes of the files located in the same directories with the same names. An example is in the screenshot below. On the left is a server with a problem, on the right is a server without a problem. Files of different sizes are highlighted in red. Yellow highlighted files that appear after the correct installation of updates.

In the next step, I copied over the files from the server without any problems. It was required to change the rights to directories and files on the receiving server.

After completing the steps, the update process completed without errors.
