Hello everyone,

I have a customer that has a slight problem that I can't get my head around. They have built a Task Sequence that is customized for Windows 11 with a few different settings compared to their Windows 10 Task Sequence. I'll get to the point what the problem is.
Whenever they deploy/install their test devices, it only gets to the following Task Sequence step "Setup Windows and Configuration Manager", it initializes a reboot and it gets to the lock screen where you can login with the local Administrator account. My guess is that it has to do something with the answer file but even I have re-created a new unattend.xml and I re-created a new reference-image with slightly help from these urls:
https://oofhours.com/2022/10/06/get-ready-and-get-mdt-ready-to-deploy-windows-11-22h2/
I quite certain that Johan Arwidmark also had a blog post how to create reference image with Windows 11 22H2 - But I can't seem to find it now.

Environment setup:

  • ConfigMgr 2211
  • ADK 22H2
  • Windows 10 22H2 - Which works perfect with October patch applied to image.
  • MDT 8456

The steps they do to produce an image.

  1. They use MDT to create reference images to apply updates, apply some windows apps etc.
  2. They import the captured image/wim-file to ConfigMgr Task Sequence
  3. They also use answer file to their OS - This has been customized to fit Windows 11 to my knowledge - and it is in a CM Package and the package is distributed and updated

Troubleshooting steps

So ... I'm quite lost. It seems like I have missed something crucial/important.

I can provide more info when questions arise.

First of all I will suggest not to use a reference image. Build and capture is a legacy way of imaging devices and doesn’t fit in WaaS. Secondly, if the process is getting stuck at Setup Windows and Configuration Manager then the issue could be with the drivers or Configuration Manager package\command lines. Did you try disabling the step and allow the TS to finish after the image has applied and domain joined?
