Can an onpremise MABS install, connected to Active Directory domain A - backup VMs connected to Active Directory domain B?

We are looking to install MABS server onprem (not as an Azure VM) to backup VM workloads in the onprem Data Center. We will be connecting MABS to an enterprise active directory domain, however, some of the VMs needing to be backed up could be connected to a different Active Directory domain or simply a WorkGroup. Can this be accomplished OR does the on prem MABS server have to be in the same Active Directory domain as the VMs it is backing up?
