Networked Label Printers in a mixed Azure and AD environment

We have a mixed environment of Azure and AD joined machines. We have an on prem AD joined print server. AD joined machines are able to map and connect to the AD joined print server devices normally. Azure joined machines have many issues when connecting to label printers or remaining connected to the printers. I suspect permission / token related root cause. How are other companies in transition to Azure accomplishing printing in a mixed environment with an AD joined print server? Universal print would work if label printers were supported, at this time they are not in scope.

    Hi Dan,

It sounds like you have been discussing label printers with Philp at Microsoft.

With regard to connections by Azure joined machines, would a local printer on the Azure client system be okay?

You can use the LPD service in the server, either Windows or 3rd party, and add a local printer, with the correct driver, with the printer set up to a Standard TCP/IP port in LPR mode.

LPR Byte Counting must be enabled

For the Windows shared printer, set up the share using one word. NO spaces please. You can get the port working but keep it simple for the share name.

    Thanks

    Hello Dan Blackwell,

Yes, this is expected as the transmission between Onprem-Azure machines or services may be limited by some authentication levels that may disrupt the service.

In this case you will need to use "Hybrid Could Printing" .

Please check this official community publication in how to configure this service and explanation about the architecture:
