Update Debian OS on-site

Question

Hi,
i wanted to ask u kindly about the ways to update a Debian OS VM in Azure Platforms.
My Debian machine version is 10 (Buster) and i wanted to update it to 11 (Bullseye).

Can Azure Migration help me with that? like preparing a new VM Debian os 11 and then transfer the data to it.

I know these other ways too:

• lift and shift
• traditional way on-site, performing a dry-run upgrade.

Hi,

The Migration and modernization tool only supports like-for-like migrations currently. The tool doesn’t support upgrading the OS version during migration. The migrated machine will have the same OS as the source machine.

I will suggest lift and shift approach instead of migration if it is single VM.

@Ayoub Saghir thank you for the reply. Can you please clarify the question further based on the following points:-

1. Azure Migrate helps you discover, assess and migrate applications, infrastructure and data from your on-premises environments to Azure. In this regard, the lift-and-shift migration strategy allows you to re-host your existing workload. Please see On Prem To The Cloud: Lift and Shift (Ep 2) for a discussion on it. I would like to understand - what is your end goal? Are you trying to move a Debain VM from on-prem environment to Azure VM? If yes, then Azure Migrate can help you with that, based on the answer given by Marshaljs above.
2. Also, could you please clarify update a Debian OS VM in Azure Platforms. Is the Debian VM already hosted as Azure VM, and you are trying to upgrade from v10 to v11? If your question is related to upgrading the Azure VM running Debian 10 to Debain 11, it is not supported OS for automatic upgrade, as listed here - Supported OS images for automatic OS image upgrade. However, you can upgrade it as you would upgrade an on-prem VM.
