Azure Data Studio - SQL Migration extension

Fellow DBA,

We are using the new Azure Data Studio with the SQL Migration Extension plug in.

When you select a number of databases on an instance to evaluate, then you setup collecting performance measures, is it looking at the measures ONLY for those selected db's or is looking at the entire instance regardless of dbs.?

Hi, @Mark Gordon Thanks for providing additional information, When collecting data it collects for the whole instance and all databases at once but when you run the recommendation, it only recommends for whatever dbs were selected on the original assessment page, the only thing that doesn't take into account specific dbs is the data collection process, but once the data has been collected, you can run recommendation for any subset of databases you want and the recommendation will respect it, you just don't need to recollect data every time is the point.

Hi Geetha, So, let me clarify this.

We start a project, we connect to the instance, we select the 12 databases on the instance out of 50. We select SQL Managed instance. We sample peformance data. We let it run for a while.

When we feel it is enough, we stop the collection, we see the recommendeed core/space etc. That core/space display is based on the 12 we chose?

@Mark Gordon That is correct. For example, in this situation, view the recommendation results for SQL DB, you will only see only recommendations for the databases that you selected. Likewise, for SQL MI and VM recommendations, the instance-level recommendation will only include the selected databases.

With that being said, at the time of data collection, it does collect data for all databases at once, regardless of which ones you selected to assess. What this means is, even if you only selected these 12 databases originally and collected data, you can generate recommendations all over again for a completely different set of databases and reuse the already collected data, without having to recollect.

So, in our case, we are kind of doing it all at the same time. We selected 12, then did performance, it still looked at the whole server. Then when we stopped the performance measure, because we selected 12, the Managed and VM frames will look at the data collected for those 12 and make recommendation when it refreshes itself..

OK. So it sounds like for us, we are kind of doing both at once. We select the 12, then run the performance. We stop the peformance which has measured ALL dbs on the instance. Then when we see the recommendation for Managed or VM, it will show for the 12 because that is what we picked. But, inside performance, it actually measured all dbs.
