SCCM Office installation stuck during OSD Task Sequence

Hi,

I hope you might have some suggestions for me on this issue. I have exhausted my google search but not getting anywhere.

In my "bare metal" OSD Task Sequence, I have added the Office package in the Install Apps step. The TS had been working with no issues for a year, then recently it has started to halt when it comes to installing Office. Everything else works fine, but it just gets stuck at installing Office. In trying to figure out what was going on, I gave office its own "Intall Apps" step and moved it to the end. When the TS sits at the Office install step for hours, I have to reboot the system. The computer boots up fine, joined the domain and logs on fine, but of course in the Deployment status, it's never finished, still shows as "in progress".

If I take out Office, the TS finishes without any errors. Office can be installed through Software Center after OS deployed, no issue.

When I look through the log, trying to understand any warnings/errors after the office step, I find these, I have google them but not really getting anything clear.

Thank you for all your help and time.

    Hi @MTran,

According to smsts-status success but errors in logs-Belkin ethernet adapter.log, A job with ID 897c3708-7c0f-4d75-b5ef-4715c202b50a cannot be connected. And the error 0x87d00215 is mean that “Item not found”. For more details, we may need to check DCMAgent.log, please upload it for our reference.

Does the application install outside the imaging setup?

    Hi @MTran

To narrow down the problem, we need more information. Please help upload a task sequence screenshot and a full smsts.log for our reference.

    Looking forward to your reply.

    Best regards,
    Cherry

    Hi,

This is a screenshot of my Task sequence. The OS image/boot image has no drivers injected, basic image.

I had to give Office its own step and placed it at the end. And because there is no error during the process, Task sequence will not skip Office step, instead it just sits there until I am forced to reboot the system to move on.

    A few observations:

In our environment, we try to standardize on the same laptop models. I've noticed that on laptops with built-in NIC (HP Elite 850 G3/G5), sometimes with any luck, Office goes through, but most of the time I have to image a second time to get it.

On the new HP model (HP Firefly G8) with no built-in NIC, I have to use USB-C to Ethernet adapter (HP brand) to image and 100% of the time it sits at Office installation. Whereas before using the same ethernet adapter worked without issue, althought before the model was Firefly G7. Not sure if the models of laptops might play a part in this? I just can't remember when it started to have the issue, so it's hard to pin point.

Just now I re-image the laptop using a Belkin USB-C/Ethernet adapter. Office appears to have installed. Deployment status shows "success", but smsts.log threw errors that the action failed. So I am very confused.

    Will post logs shortly...

    Thank you!
