Windows 10 Vs Windows Server 2003

Hi, I have an old control system that currently runs on Windows Server 2003. The control system has x2 PCs arranged in a hot-standby fashion. Both PCs are networked together with the client application software keeping synchronized to the server. If I use Wireshark I see the client requesting updates from the server without issue. In Wireshark I use the 'Follow TCP Stream' option and this nicely shows the client traffic is red and server traffic in blue.

I have been trying to run the same software application in Window 10 Enterprise LTSC (32 bit edition). I can see the client requesting updates from the server (Wireshark red text). However no response is sent from the server (Wireshark blue text).

It may be that my software application is just too old for Windows 10 but was wondering is there any recommendations to get this working? Perhaps some registry changes I can apply to Windows 10 to make it behave more like Windows Server 2003?

    Hello Neil,

Based on just the limited information that you have provided, there is a chance that this is just a result of the Windows Firewall on the Window 10 PC acting as a server in this scenario.

I can't remember what the default settings for various types of firewall logging are, but if logging for a type (e.g. pfirewall.log, netevents) is enabled then examining the log or the events (e.g. netsh wfp show netevents file=-) will show if connections/traffic to your server is being blocked.

    Hello

Thank you for your question and reaching out. I can understand you are having query\issues related to Windows 2003 application access into Windows 10.

Please note that Windows 2003 is legacy and unsupported application , hence you may find issues due to compatibility with Windows 10. Also please note that TLS 1.0 and SMB 1 is also not supported in newer version of Windows.

In your case I will suggest you to update your application to latest version from software vendor.
