We have a physical server with duel Xeon Silver 4208 CPSs, 128 RAM, and 2TB RAID1 SSD. Can I use this machine to setup Virtual machine-based remote desktop role?

This server has been setup for session-based remote desktop role (RDS), and running fine with about 7 users. We have Windows server hardware licenses, 10 Windows User licenses, and 10 remote desktop licenses.

We now would like to reinstall this server and configure it as the machine-based remote desktop (VDI). In the minimum, can we do that with only this physical server alone? What version of Windows do we need? Are there any other things we need? We do not have a static public IP.

Thanks.

Hi. Thank you for your question and reaching out. I’d be more than happy to help you with your query

Yes, one physical server can be configured with a VDI role. In order to do so, you will need to install and configure the appropriate hypervisor software such as VMware vSphere or Microsoft Hyper-V. After the hypervisor software is installed, you can then configure the server to host multiple virtual machines, each of which can be configured with the appropriate VDI roles and settings. Additionally, you will need to configure the server's storage and networking to ensure that it has sufficient resources to support your VDI environment.
