How to Remove Azure DR ASR Appliance

Hi, Can anyone tell me how can i remove/delete Azure DR ASR Appliance from Azure Portal?

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A platform. Happy to answer your question. There are a few steps you need to take in-order to remove the ASR configuration appliance from portal.

Ensure the following before you start decommissioning your Configuration Server.

Disable protection for all virtual machines under this Configuration Server through replicated items blade in vault.

Disassociate and Delete all Replication policies from the Configuration Server.

Delete all vCenters servers/vSphere hosts that are associated to the Configuration Server. For details see, the following https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/site-recovery/physical-manage-configuration-server#delete-or-unregister-a-configuration-server

If you encounter any error or issue, please tag me in your comments, I will be more than happy to help further.

Note: For modern appliance, the remove/unregister is not possible as of now. Product team is working on this feature. In cases like this, customers delete the vault and complete RG itself.

Hi, Thanks for the solution but this is for Classic Azure DR Configuration Appliance but in my case we have Azure modern DR Appliance.

Hi Deepak Kumar,

I have talked to the product teams about the modern appliance Un-registration and deletion, they confirmed that, there isn't an option to remove the modern appliance at the moment and they are working on enabling this option.

In cases like this, customers delete the vault and complete RG itself.

I don't see any option to remove ASR appliance in modern experience of Vault. If you try deleting the vault you are being asked to remove the appliance.

@Sunil Dahiya There is not an option to remove the modern appliance at the moment and the product team is working on enabling this option.

For now, you need to delete the vault and complete resource group itself.

I also have two ASR replication appliances in one Recovery Services Vault. I have switched all replication from appliance 1 to appliance 2.

I would like to delete the 1st appliance. If I turn this virtual machine off on my local infrastructure, I get alerts every 24 hours about the machine health of 1st appliance being critical. I would like to delete this virtual machine from my local infrastructure but I cannot do this without being constantly bombarded by alerts.

Is there a way to unregister the appliance manually or via the Azure CLI/Powershell in the Modern Experience?

Hi, the idea to delete the resource group is NOT OKAY. For example, I have a new ASR vault and an old ASR vault (both "modernized") in the same resource group. I need to delete the old ASR vault and cannot. How am I supposed to delete the entire resource group?... I have another vault in there that I need to keep! NOWHERE along the way did it ever say not to do this because we might need to delete the entire resource group. Who would design something like this? It is either terrible developers or terrible leadership, or both. And Sadiqh down below says "Sorry the inconvenience"... what!?

I found myself in the same situation: Modern ASR, local appliance, no delete option.

I was successful in deleting the ASR setup without removing the resource group. I had the ASR Appliance shut down, already ran through the manual cleanup, deleted the attached storage account, then ran the powershell script you can download in the delete option. It showed a bunch of operation failures because of what was already deleted, or not used. But in the end the ASR was deleted and the resource group it was in still exists with only the Key vault in it.

It seems there have been some changes. Azure now allows you to delete a configuration appliance from the portal.

Hi Deepak,

I am from the ASR Product team. We have recently released a feature to enable delete and reset for appliance if its unhealthy or healthy state respectively.
