Skype for Business Online vs. on-premise

we are in a hybrid exchange online environment and we have a Skype for Business server on-premise. we are starting to migrate mailboxes up to O365 and deploy out the Office 365 suite. We are having to uninstall our old version of Skype and install Skype for Business 2016 (For Office 365) for users that have the Office 365 suite. I am not sure if these users are still connecting to our Skype for Business On-Premise server or are they now connecting to Skype for Business Online? Is there a way to check this? Thank you.

Make sure that the user has a valid Skype for Business Online license in the Office 365 portal and that the sign-in status of the user is set to Allowed.
Then you could try to sign in to Skype for Business Online through any Lync 2013 or Skype for Business client to see if it can login successfully.
