Cannot connect hotmail account to outlook 2019

Question

Hi,

on Wednesday this week one of my Windows 11 computers running Outlook 2019 stopped connecting to my Hotmail email account. In an attempt to fix this I tried to create a new profile. I have added other email addresses to this profile with no issues. One outlook.com and the other gmail.com.

When I try to add the hotmail.com account the automated process just whirs for a few minutes then says cannot connect and contact your mail administrator.

I have tried to attached the address both through outlook itself and through the mail setting in control panel. Bot with the same result

What I have tried so far has been:

scanned for viruses and then turned off virus checker and firewall.

Repaired the office installation both locally and online.

tried changing the password to possibly force the installer to prompt for the password

checked for updates

logged into the account through the web browser with no problems, and checked that 2FA is not enabled.

googled possible fixes and read many forums.

The hotmail account is also the windows account on this machine as well, if that makes any difference.

This is a Lenovo laptop running windows 11 and stand alone office 2019. (A long story as to why still on 2019, but do not want to move to 365 on this machine)

I have another Lenovo laptop running Office 365 which does not have any problem. Our IPads, iPhone and android phones also have no issue either.

Pulling my hair out at them moment I can normally fix most things on my computers and know my way around computers and networks, but this has me stumped.

When you set up the account, have you attempted to use Exchange as the mail server type?

Based on my test on Office2019, I was able to successfully configure Hotmail account, and considering that you have taken some troubleshooting, I recommend that you try uninstalling and re-installing Office2019.

I just had the same problem on windows 11. It was working yesterday. I looked at the clock on my laptop and it was set forward by 6 hours even though it is set for automatio update. I corrected the time and Outlook/Hotmail worked again.
