How to add an Azure subscription? No access permissions in active directory.

Hi,

I am trying to use my personal Microsoft account to create an Azure subscription. When signed in I can see that I have 3 active directories. One of these I created recently, and it is the one I intend to use moving forward. I do not own the other two.

I am unable to create an Azure subscription. When I go to the "Subscriptions" page, I am met with the message:

"Your current access does not include permissions to view any subscriptions."

If I try to click "Add", then it loads for a bit and presents the following message:

"In order to view your eligible offers, please click here to switch your directory to <one-of-the-two-active-directories-I-dont-own>."

Naturally, I don't want to create a subscription there, I want it in my own Active Directory, of which I am (as far as I know) the administrator. Searching for help I found a page that directed me to elevate my access to global admin:

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/role-based-access-control/elevate-access-global-admin

This has not seemed to have any effect however.

I also tried using the "Start with an Azure free trial" from the Azure portal while logged in with my account and on my own Active Directory. However, after going through that process, I found out that it had created the subscription in a different Active Directory than the one I was signed in with.

I have also been unable to find a way to remove Active Directories from my account. The closest I have found was an article directing me to https://myaccount.microsoft.com/organizations in order to delete unwanted organizations there. The 2 unwanted Active Directories (that I can see and switch to in the Azure portal) do not show up here, however.

Perhaps I am simply completely misunderstanding how the concept of an Active Directory applies here, I am new to using Azure personally, but advice would be appreciated. If I need to share the names of the Active Directories involved, please let me know.

Thank you for reading.

    Hi Tobias,

I will suggest you to read through the information of Azure Tenant and Subscription info on this page, basically in short Azure Tenant is a AD directory, and Subscription is part of that tenant so you can manage resources, products etc and billing is part of it you can have multi subscription model for Dev and Test if that is the requirement.

    https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/enterprise/subscriptions-licenses-accounts-and-tenants-for-microsoft-cloud-offerings?view=o365-worldwide

    Hope this helps.

    @Tobias van de Ven

Your first issue is to leave other directories. You can follow below steps to do the same.

    • You're using a personal account, you'll need to use a My Account URL that includes your tenant's name or tenant ID. For example: if you tenant name is contoso.onmicrosoft.com then you will have to go to URL https://myaccount.microsoft.com?tenantId=contoso.onmicrosoft.com. You might need to open this URL in a private browser session.
    • Select Organizations from the left navigation pane or select the Manage organizations link from the Organizations block.
    • The Organizations page appears, where you can view and manage the organizations you belong to.

    User's image

    • Home organization: Your home organization is listed first. This organization owns your work or school account. Because your account is managed by your administrator, you're not allowed to leave your home organization. You'll see there's no link to Leave. If you don't have an assigned home organization, you'll just see a single heading that says Organizations with the list of your associated organizations.
    • Other organizations you collaborate with: You'll also see the other organizations that you've signed in to previously using your work or school account. You can decide to leave any of these organizations at any time.
    • You can click on leave button in front of the organization which ever you want to leave.

Now, coming to your second question regarding subscription. If you are signing up for a new Azure subscription, you will have to login to Azure portal with account administrator account.

You can go through below article to get more information on who can sign up for new subscription.
