Visual Studio froze unexpectedly when I tried to create a new project

Hello. I am very new to Visual Studio. I tried to create my new project. As I clicked on File - New, I tried to get the cursor out of it because I wanted to record me creating a Visual Studio project for the first time ever. It then simply froze and stopped responding. I tried to close it and it only responded after a long amount of time. I didn't actually click on anything.

*I was trying to create Console Application based on .NET Framework

I am thinking of this as a bug or something that might require a fix. Any information on why does that happen?

The reason why am I not posting questions like these (about Visual Studio specifically) on StackOverflow is because it doesn't seem like I can log in. This is just some information so you don't tell me to ask a question to StackOverflow instead.

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Did you install/use any third-party extensions/applications?

Does it work if you open the "Developer Command Prompt for Visual Studio" => run devenv /SafeMode command and then click File - New?

Please also try to repair VS from VS Installer and run the devenv /Log command => reproduce the issue to collect the log file. The log file is normally located here: %APPDATA%\Microsoft\VisualStudio**<Version>\ActivityLog.xml**. If the issue still persists, please share us the log file to check further.

Hey there, thanks for an answer.

I don't have any third-party extensions or applications. The only applications I use for .NET Desktop Development are Visual Studio Code (in case if something happens with Visual Studio) and Visual Studio. I only have 1 workload installed in Visual Studio - that is .NET Desktop Development.

I did run 'devenv /SafeMode' in Dev CMD for VS, but the issue persists - when I click on Continue without code in the main menu -> I click on File, I try to hide that menu by moving the cursor away - VS just hangs up and then Windows creates a window 'Visual Studio stopped responding' (or WerFault window). Everything works properly if I don't hide the File menu.

I installed Visual Studio in Jan 21 2023, so there shouldn't be that much to be broken or corrupt if that's a new clean installation.

However, I have %TEMP%\VSTelem, %TEMP%\VSLogs and %TEMP%\VSTelem.Out folders that I can share, because they contain telemetry stuff, and my expectation is "hmmm, maybe they can contain some useful information". If required, I can share these files. Let me know if that is required. It shouldn't be risky to do anyway because I am not logged in in Visual Studio anyway.

I’d like to check the ActivityLog.xml file, could you share it here(hide the private information or share the related error message snippets). Besides, does updating Windows OS fix this issue?

I don't think updating my Windows OS would help, I am currently on Win10 21H2 19044.2130 (10.0.19044.2130). Here's activitylog.setup.xml from C:\Users%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\VisualStudio\17.0. I couldn't find ActivityLog.xml, but only ActivityLog**.Setup**.xml.

I uploaded the entire file because I don't think there's some unsafe information to share (because I am not logged in anyway, that's the only unsafe information I would possibly think of).

The differences between TXT and XML are none, they're all the same.

Hi @Abdulqadir Aliyev ,

The ActivityLog.Setup.xml file is different from the ActivityLog.xml file. The ActivityLog.Setup.xml file doesn't include more detailed information about why VS stopped responding.

Did you run this command devenv /Log(in Developer Command Prompt for VS XXXX) and reproduce the issue to generate the ActivityLog.xml file?

I didn't. However, I found the other way to create my project, and using that step Visual Studio seems to work as expected. I actually didn't need to click on 'Continue without code', that may be the reason why VS has stopped responding unexpectedly.

I’m happy to hear that you have found a workaround.

These days, Visual Studio version 17.5.0 and 17.5.1 have been released, would you mind trying to update Visual Studio to a newer/the latest version and check if this issue disappears?

If you do updated VS, please feel free to let us know if this issue disappears.
