I have a requirement where we need to backup VMs (image level) running on standalone ESXi servers. I see that Azure backup server need to be set up in order to take image level backups. I am planning to set up Azure backup sever on the same ESXi server as a VM to backup the server. But I am not clear on the storage requirement for the backup server. We have about 1TB of VMs to be backed up. Can anyone provide me with this information on how much storage that is needed for the Azure backup server to take the backups and upload it to the Azure cloud.

Hi @Arosh Wijepala Thank you for reaching out to us. Happy to answer your question!

The minimum local storage required is total size of all the VMs protected plus delta (roughly 5 to 10% of total size based on your churn pattern and again capacity planner gives you exact number). Please ensure that the retention period for disk is minimal to reduce your local storage requirement. We recommend to move backups older than 5 days to recovery services vault.

You can also use MABS capacity planner. The capacity planner will give you the required memory size and CPU core count based on your inputs. You can then use this information to choose the appropriate Azure VM size. The capacity planner also provides the total disk size required for the VM along with the required disk IOPS. We recommend using a standard SSD disk for the VM. By pooling more than one SSD, you can achieve the required IOPS.

    Hope this answers your question!
