Server 2019 Virtual Machine shuts down instead of reboot
This VM is only a month old. It was a stock image - Server 2019 with SQL 2019. About 2 weeks ago, it did this same sort of thing, but I did not have time to track down Event Log entries at the time. This past weekend the VM was installing Windows Updates on Sunday morning. Everything installed fine and I got the following event entry:
Log Name: System
Source: User32
Date: 2/19/2023 2:35:27 AM
Event ID: 1074
Task Category: None
Level: Information
Keywords: Classic
User: SYSTEM
Computer: xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Description:
The process C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server IaaS Agent\Bin\SqlIaaSExtension.Service.exe (xxxxxxxxx) has initiated the restart of computer xxxxxxxxx on behalf of user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM for the following reason: Legacy API shutdown
Reason Code: 0x80070000
Shutdown Type: restart
Comment: Microsoft SQL Server Automated Patching needs to restart your machine
This seems normal. However, the VM never came back up until I initiated a restart from the Azure Portal on Monday morning. So, the server was down for all day Sunday. Any ideas as to why this happened? Why did it not restart cleanly?
