IaasVMProvider service stops

Have a VM running Win2019 within Azure. Found the service named IaasVMProvider is set to Automatic but is always at a Stopped Status.

How do we keep it at a Running Status? Or is it normal for it to go into Stopped State.

Hi,

It is normal for it to Stop when there is no backup running to conserve resources. When a backup job runs it will be started and then stop again as needed. It is part of the VMSnapshot extension which allows Azure Backup to take application-consistent backup of the VM.

It is normal for it to Stop when there is no backup running to conserve resources. When a backup job runs it will be started and then stop again as needed. It is part of the VMSnapshot extension which allows Azure Backup to take application-consistent backup of the VM.

That is all good though fail to understand why it is setup as Automatic if it is a triggered event. Azure VM Agent is running as expected.

Can I change the IaaSVMProvider from Automatic to Manual? This way the Server manager Dashboard should not report it as an errored service that is Automatic but Stopped.

I don't know the reason why it is Automatic. Perhaps they want it to run at Startup to check something and then stop. Having a service set to Automatic but Stopped is not necessarily an indication of a problem, but I understand what you mean about Server Manager showing it in red.

What you could do is set it to Manual and then monitor the VM over time to make sure that backups are still completing successfully with no strange errors/warnings that didn't happen before.

Azure Portal Backup is showing no errors. - it says Snapshots are being created on schedule as expected.

Do you happen to know where the IaasVMProvider service writes its logs?

I believe it logs to event logs, probably at least one under Application and Services logs. Don't remember exact ones off the top of my head. As with many things, if there is a problem (I doubt there is) it could manifest under multiple areas. For example, the extension creates volume snapshot so there could be entries relating to that.

If the service is set to Automatic but is always in a Stopped state, you can try the following steps:

Restart the IaasVMProvider service. You can use the Get-Service and Restart-Service cmdlets in PowerShell to restart the service.

   Get-Service -Name IaasVMProvider | Restart-Service

Check the dependencies of the IaasVMProvider service. If the service is dependent on another service that is not running, you can start the dependent service and then restart the IaasVMProvider service.
Check the event logs for any errors related to the IaasVMProvider service. You can use the Get-EventLog cmdlet in PowerShell to retrieve the event logs.

   Get-EventLog -LogName System -Source IaasVMProvider
