John C Beach Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum! Thanks for posting your query here.
Is there a threshold for Gen2 Azure Maps transactions, below which a developer does not incur cost while they try out the API?
Your understanding is correct. There is no threshold for Gen2 Azure Maps transactions below which a developer does not incur cost while they try out the API. The cost of Azure Maps depends on the usage of the API.
I looked at the screenshot from when I signed up for an Azure Maps service, and it looks like a minimum activity level would easily fit in the Free Tier. At that time, I even asked for clarification, and was told that based on the usage I described, usage falls within the free tier. However, I am being charged almost $10 a day.
When you use Azure Maps Services, the API requests you make generate transactions. Your transaction usage is available for review in your Azure portal Metrics report.
These transactions can be either billable or non-billable usage, depending on the service and the feature. It’s important to understand which usage generates a billable transaction and how it’s calculated so you can plan and budget for the costs associated with using Azure Maps. Billable transactions will show up in your Cost Analysis report within the Azure portal.
Please see below screenshots for more details.
To avoid unexpected charges while you are still exploring the Azure Maps API, you may want to consider setting up usage alerts or usage quotas to help you monitor your usage and avoid exceeding the free tier limits. This will give you more control over your usage and help you manage costs.
