Iscsi Target problem

We have a windows storage server 2016 used as ISCSI Target for vmware esxi hosts that mount a disk for storing archived vm.

So there are no running VM on the volume mounted from the storage server.

The problem is when we try to move VMs data files to the mounted volume.

It happens that for some of the data to be moved the storage server stops "responding" to the vmware hosts and the copy fails.

We restart the ISCSI Target service and the Data Store is visible again on the hosts.

This issue DOES NOT happen every time and not with all of the data disk to be moved.
The issue does not seems to be related to the size of the VM to be moved.

Hi. Thank you for your question and reaching out. I’d be more than happy to help you with your query

Do the following procedures to mount a backed-up virtual machine disk and export the mounted volume for a file restore operation:

Setup the mount proxy nodes as follows:

In the Data Protection for VMware vSphere GUI, navigate to the Configuration pane.

On the Tasks list, choose Edit IBM Spectrum Protect Configuration. It may take a few seconds for the configuration notebook to load.

Choose a VMware datacenter from the table on the Mount Proxy Node Pairs page.

Add Mount Proxy Node Pair by clicking the button.

On the table, click New Settings.

The Linux mount proxy node must be explicitly setup for Linux operating systems. For configuring the Linux mount proxy node, use the example dsm.sys file content presented in the Mount Proxy Configuration window.

    Hey,

Have you checked MS iSCSI Target logs? What storage do you have under iSCSI Target? The issue might be to slow storage you are using for you target and iSCSI sessions might get reset, which results in the issue you are facing.

You can also go with StarWind VSAN (either free or paid) as an alternative to share iSCSI storage to your ESXi hosts. Might help: https://www.starwindsoftware.com/starwind-virtual-san
