Maximum connections for RDP Device CAL

Hello everyone,

I have bought a RDS License for one device (per Device CAL), and configured the maximum connection as 5.

But it occurred errors when three users were connecting to the RDP Server through this device at the same time. (As the former two users haven't logged their accounts off)

Whether I bought the wrong type of license or too little? What's the relationship between the per Device CAL and the number of sessions? Thanks.

    Hello there,

Each user and device that connects to a Remote Desktop Session host need a client access license (CAL). You use RD Licensing to install, issue, and track RDS CALs.

When a user or a device connects to an RD Session Host server, the RD Session Host server determines if an RDS CAL is needed. The RD Session Host server then requests an RDS CAL from the Remote Desktop license server. If an appropriate RDS CAL is available from a license server, the RDS CAL is issued to the client, and the client is able to connect to the RD Session Host server and from there to the desktop or apps they're trying to use.

License your RDS deployment with client access licenses (CALs) https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/remote/remote-desktop-services/rds-client-access-license

Hope this resolves your Query !!

    Hello @Jingjing Du

if two users have not logged off from their sessions, then there will be only three available connections left, which is why the error occurred when the third user attempted to connect.

you have purchased the correct type of license, license is not the problem.

You need either increase the maximum number of connections allowed on the RDS server or ask the users to log off their sessions when they are finished using the RDS server, or force logoff after X time disconnect session using a GPO.

    Regards
