SQL alias updatiion in ShareePoint server

I have seen DBSP2016TST as DB server name in the servers in the farm section from system settings

and I have seen above DB server name as SQL alias when I have navigated to C:/WIndows/system32/cliconfig.exe and below is the screenshot of SQL alias in the WFE server I have noticed

Now server name for above SQL alias is GS1015 and it has instance having 65 databases , which they are planning to move new SharePoint SQL instance which is GS1020.

Plan is backup and restore to new server instance. For some reason ( might be huge size) SQL team is planning db backup from old instance and restore instance.

Now it will be great help for me to if you could clarify below questions

After changing to new SQL server(GS1020), what is the new SQL alias and who will give?
After I got new SQL alias, I believe i have to update in the above screenshot area, if so I should remove existing alias and add new one? or edit existing one?
In the screenshot, who will give connection parameter?
Can we keep old and new alias both in the above screenshot, as they are planning daily 10 database backups and restore to new SQL instances? or is it better changing alias only after all db migration is over?
In what are places we need to change, do we need to change in all SharePoint servers manually in the above screenshot area? and after doing this , do we need to mount each db with new SQL alias?
Before backup DB team will keep Database offline, so during this time I believe sites are not accessible, what is the error it will give when try to browse the site?

as per db team one database will take 4 to 6 hours for backup and restore , can I consider it as down time.

I have gone through below 2 blogs to understand better, but not much clear for me and left with above 7 doubts. Please clarify, thank you

Hi @sns ,

You can edit an existing alias, GS1020 will give connection parameter. You can keep old and new alias both in the above screenshot. SQL Alias to be set on All SharePoint Servers except DB Server (SQL Server!) You need to change in all SharePoint servers manually except DB Server (SQL Server!) We cannot access the site when the Database is offline. The error screenshot is as shown below. When the database is backed up and restored, you can consider it as down time.

Please clarify my final follow up questions:

I got it, but who will give new alias? how new SQL alias will look like?

and DO I need to collect GS1020 connection parameter from SQL team?

so I heard it is good to stop all the SharePoint services from SharePoint end before backup of databases? what you suggest you on this

FYI: we are doing in test environment, is there any command to stop all SharePoint services at time. that if you say yes

how to handle SharePoint config db in this situation? is normal backup and restore like other dbs?

New SQL alias is GS1020. Your db team created an alias on all SharePoint servers to make ‘GS1015’ point to ‘GS1020’.

I think you do not need to collect GS1020 connection parameter from SQL team.

Moving the SharePoint database from one server to another can be achieved with the following steps:

Step 1: Stop All SharePoint Services:

Step 2: Backup & Restore All SharePoint Databases to the new SQL Server

Step 3: Change the SQL Alias to Point to the new SQL Server

Step 4: Start All SharePoint Services

One last question: Please suggest

Instead of adding new alias in the SP servers,

Can respective team do pointing new server ( GS1020) to old alias itself only ?

is it possible? If yes who will do it?

Use the same method to point the GS1020 to the old alias, done by your db team.
