DFS Replication

Hi all,

We have DFS server today. It is an old one 2016 machine which will be replaced by 2022. We think that the best way to migrate shared to a new server is to start DFS replication. Now we have a 2 questions:

  1. When we add a new referral server what do we need to configure when it comes to Shared folder permissions. Does this mean only the root folder of the dfs share and not the sub-folders?

  1. When we create dfs replication, and when we map source share and destination share do I need to create same permission level on the destination replication server. I mean local folders on second repl server? When I want to create new folder on destination, it automatically create 4 new folders and I need to add admin permissions when I need to rename those folders?

The second question is regarding demoting the primary DFS? Can we when everything is replicated just turn off the primary old DFS?

Please help!

    Hello there,

Yes, you can turn off the primary DFS. It will still have the replication relationship and keep the data on both servers, but won't replicate anymore if you choose Disable. You have to determine on what server you want to keep the data, change the DFS target to only point to that, and then you can remove the share and data on the other server

DFS Replication in Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2008 R2 includes the ability to add a failover cluster as a member of a replication group.

DFS Replication and DFS Namespaces can be used separately or together. In addition, DFS Replication can be used to replicate standalone DFS namespaces, which was not possible with FRS.

Hope this resolves your Query !!
