SharePoint - how do we restrict renaming/moving of folders at a certain level, but sub-folders/files within those folders can be renamed/moved?

Hi,

We have SharePoint (I don't fully understand the Libraries/Sites terminology, so please bear with me):

Site: CompanyName
Library?: Shared Documents
Folder: Clients

Within the Clients folder, we have a folder for each of our clients (E.g. John Smith, ABC Company).
We'd like to restrict actions within the Clients folder to prevent renaming/moving of a folder located within the Clients folder (e.g. you couldn't rename the folder John Smith, or move the folder ABC Company into the folder John Smith).
Within the folder John Smith, there are other files and folders. We would still like to be able to rename/remove files and folders within the folder John Smith.

Does that make sense?
Thank you

Sam

P.s. To me this seems like it would be such a common business setup, that regular users are not supposed to be able to edit the top-level folders, but need access to edit and add to the contents inside the folder.

    Hi @Sam Gray,

You can stop inheriting users' permissions and grant unique permission to them.

Go to libraries settings > Permissions for this document library, click Stop Inheriting Permission in the ribbon. Delete all groups in this page and grant read permission level to those users. Then they will not be able to rename/remove folders. But if the users don't have edit permission at first level, they still have no access to edit at subfolder level.

    HI Allen,

I have similar question need more clarity on the permission level.

I have sub-site: ABC, and a Document Library: FINANCE. Inside finance doc library I have the following folders:

    • payroll
    • clients
    • cheque
    • income
    • payment

Now, how do I limit users I have provided access to each of the folder above not to have ability to RENAME the folder, but they can still have the ability to edit the content inside any of the folders i.e. add/delete/remove/rename any objects.

    Thanks
