I have installed sharepoint 2016 on a single server so that i can upgrade from sharepoint 2013 ( by copying and upgrading databases and service applications)

During the install, I specified the server role as "Single Server Farm". I have not run the Farm Configuration wizard as i am upgrading from sharepoint 2013.

As part of the upgrade process, i need to start the service applications, but there is no option to start them , and it appears that this is only possible if the server has the "Custom" role.

If I change the role of the server from "single server farm" to "custom" , will this allow me to start the service applications and continue the upgrade process without any issues?

    Hi @Greg Booth ,

MinRole in SharePoint 2016 starts necessary services on respective servers automatically. We don’t need to start any service instance from the “Services on Server” page of the SharePoint 2016 Central Administration site.

Instead of specific MinRoles , if you use “Custom” MinRole, you’ll find “Start” and “Stop” links next to each service instance according to their current status.
If you want to start some uncommon services, you can change it to "custom ".

For more information about MinRole, please refer to:
