Why do you need ADFS to authenticate to O365/Azure AD?

I need O365 users to validate against the local AD for user monitoring purposes. We have an application that pulls access reports but can only query the local AD.

We currently have the users synchronized with "ADConnect" with the password hash.

I need some manual to change this synchronization to an environment with ADFS with proxy server.

You can still do that without AD FS. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory/hybrid/how-to-connect-pta Pass Through Authentication avoid the use of AD FS while still keeping the authentication on-prem.
