If you're a student and new to Visual Studios like I am, then this is an extremely frustrating error, but ended up being an easy fix. If you're given a sample of source code from your instructor like I was, and you're expected to build upon it, then creating the project in a certain way will be your fix. You'll want to create a new project (for me it's an empty project, starting from scratch with C++), then save it in the Virtual Studios default location. There is no need to the place solution and project in same directory. Once created, VS will open up, and it's as simple as going to the top taskbar and selecting Project > Add existing item. From there you select the sample code (wherever you saved it). It will then be added to the "Source Files" folder in your solution explorer. Go ahead and click on it for it to appear in your code viewer. Then it's as simple as building the solution and starting without debugging. Building the solution and starting without debugging are both found in the top taskbar.

Which version of Visual Studio are you using? What is your project type? Please create new projects and verify if it occurs in specific project or not.

You can update your VS to the latest version and start vs in safe mode to check if the installed extensions affect or not.
