Looking for suggestions on the best way to implement WSUS in our complex test environment.

We have a pretty unique environment where we do product testing. We have these test beds that are cloned from templates we have created. The same templates are used for every test bed so the devices in each test bed have the same computer name and same SUSID. To make things more complicated, all these devices are using the same Private IP addresses inside the test bed so to make them unique to the outside world, we have to use a NAT Gateway to reach the WSUS server sitting outside the test environment. So we have already addressed the first problem which is to assign a unique SUSID to each VM in the Windows Registry but the next issue we are having is the fact that we have 100 test beds with the exact same computer name in each one and WSUS is not capable of treating these an unique machines even though they are reported from different NAT IP's.

Has anyone else run across this issue and how did you handle it? Because of our specialty test environment, we don't have a generic AD that make all these VM's part of a large domain...they are all individual test beds with the same VM's in them and that have the same computer name is them because they were cloned from a template.

Any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Guy

    Hello there,

WSUS enables you to target updates to groups of client computers. This capability can help you ensure that specific computers get the right updates at the most convenient times on an ongoing basis.

You can assign computers to computer groups by using one of two methods, server-side or client-side targeting, depending on whether or not you want to automate the process.

To enable client-side targeting on your WSUS server, click the Use Group Policy or registry settings on client computers option on the Computers Options page. https://learn.microsoft.com/de-de/security-updates/windowsupdateservices/18127378

Hope this resolves your Query !!
