It's no longer possible to click on the app to give Teams focus then click a second time to click on a conversation. Native Mac OS behavior works this way and MS Teams did not have this bug until early February. No you can click once to get Teams in focus and the second click behaves as if you double clicked a conversation. In practice this just opens a ton of random conversation windows in their own window instead of just showing them inside the app. This is a bug. Everyone on a Mac is experiencing it. I really wish MS had a QA team.
